BDO arrested for taking bribe

The Block Development Officer of Melaneelithanallur Union was arrested on Wednesday for taking bribe for awarding a contract.

Sources in Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Wing here said the Block Development Officer of Melaneelithanallur block Pitchumani (55) of Ooththumalai demanded ₹35,000 from contractor Ponraj (35) of Panaivadalichathram for awarding the ₹ 7 lakh-worth two contracts to him for sinking deep borewells.

After sustained bargaining, Mr. Ponraj, who agreed to give ₹21,000 as bribe to Pitchumani, filed a complaint with the DVAC wing here.

A team, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Mathiyazhagan trapped Pitchumani when he was receiving ₹21,000 from Mr. Ponraj on Wednesday afternoon.

Another team raided his house at Ooththumalai. Further investigations are on.
