A grand, poignant adieu to Mother Teresa
A sea of humanity on the streets, media blitzkrieg like never before and a galaxy of dignitaries from across the globe. All gathered to bid a final adieu to Mother Teresa, whose funeral was held today, eight days after she died last Friday. Calcutta’s post-Independence generation had not witnessed anything of this kind before. Being a State funeral, the army was in command. The peaceful proceedings bore ample evidence of excellent co- ordination between the army and the West Bengal Government. The funeral mass, held at the Netaji Indoor Stadium here, was attended, among others, by several heads of state, heads of government, representatives of governments the world over, royalty and personal representatives of several Presidents and Prime Ministers. The mass was supervised by Cardinal Sodano of the Vatican. In her message, Sister Nirmala, Mother Teresa’s successor and Superior General at the Missionaries of Charity, pledged to carry on the work and spread the message of love as Mother had during her lifetime. Spiritual leaders of six different faiths offered prayers.
Bombay Dyeing to raise $38 m through ECB
Bombay Dyeing has obtained clearance from the Government for ECBs aggregating $38 millions, which would be utilised for capital expenditure and working capital. The funds raised through the ECB route would finance Bombay Dyeing’s modernisation activities in the textile and DMT units, sources said. The company’s profitability of the textile division during 1996-97 was eroded due to the escalating costs, lack of liquidity in the distribution channels and high interest cost.
