These are times when one starts the day by checking and updating their social media accounts.
Among many trends that are ruling social media today, sadly, trolling has become a habit for many.
The recent Twitter outburst, where Indian women’s cricket captain Mithali Raj was trolled for posting a ‘throwback’ picture is an example.
She was trolled for the type of outfit she was wearing. Metrolife spoke to a few youngsters about what they had to say about the trolling trend.
Gnanesh N S, a businessman says that trolling has become the new ‘cool thing’ for people and should not be taken seriously.
“Negativity is bound to be a part of social media. I feel anonymity is the main reason which allows abuse to flourish on social media. Trolling might be entertaining for some but others have to pay a heavy price. Online moral policing should not be encouraged at all.”
Anitha Srinivasan, a credit analyst with a non-banking financial company, says that the tactic of trolling is not right.
“It is Mithali’s personal choice to wear what she wants to. Just because she is a star, no one has the right to curb her from wearing what she wants to. Why is it that women are always told what to wear and what not to wear?” she questions.
Pointing out the fact that it is only a small section of people trolling others on social media, she says, “They are all wannabes and this shows their mentality. It can be their way to get attention, I agree that everyone has the right to share their opinion but at the same time, they should respect other people’s choices and opinions too. Though Mithali is a celebrity, she should be given her personal space.”
Mavis George feels that instead of moving forward in our thinking, trolls are still stuck to the regressive thought process.
The entrepreneur says, “It is very unfortunate that we are seeing such comments in today’s world. Why is a male cricketer or an actor not trolled when they sport a shirtless picture?”
“However, for a matter of fact, many came in support of Mithali and this shows that many are against the practice of trolling,” she adds.
Mithali, she opines, should keep doing what she does the best -- proving herself.
“People will talk, but her work has always spoken louder than everything else. I strongly believe that social media is not a place to evaluate anyone,” she sums up.
