The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Tuesday called a special meeting of its council to make corporators understand the pros and cons of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Madhukar N Hiregange, a chartered accountant, spoke on the ‘Impact of GST on BBMP and its vendors’.

“There is a lot of confusion about GST, hence we decided to have this meeting,” BBMP Commissioner N Manjunath Prasad said when BJP corporators objected to the meeting.

“We have not broken any law,” he said while dismissing the BJP’s accusation that the meeting was called in violation of the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act, 1976. BJP corporators also said that calling the meeting after the announcement of the mayoral election was a “violation” of the model code of conduct. Mayor G Padmavathi clarified that no decision would be taken and that it was just a meeting to understand GST.
