Global server market revives with 2.8% growth: Gartner

Global server increased 2.8 per cent year-on-year (YoY) while shipments grew 2.4 per cent in the second quarter of 2017, market research firm Gartner said on Tuesday.

It is an improvement from the previous quarter when the saw a decline of 4.5 per cent (YoY) and shipments had fallen 4.2 per cent.

"The second quarter of 2017 produced some growth compared with the first quarter on a global level, with varying regional results," said Jeffrey Hewitt, Research Vice President, Gartner, in a statement.

The growth was attributed to the strong regional performance in Asia-Pacific because of data centre infrastructure growth, mostly in China and in the self-build original design manufacturer (ODM) segment.

Despite a decline of 9.4 per cent, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) continued to lead in the worldwide server market based on The company posted $3.2 billion in with total market share of 23 per cent.

With seven per cent growth and 19.9 per cent market share, Dell EMC retained the second position. It was followed by Huawei which marked a growth of 57.8 per cent, accounting for 6.1 per cent market share in the quarter.

In terms of server shipments, Dell EMC maintained the top position with 17.5 per cent market share, followed by HPE with 17.1 per cent.

"x86 servers increased 2.5 per cent in shipments and 6.9 per cent in revenue," noted Hewitt.
