Mumbai: The two accused arrested on Sunday for allegedly attacking a toll booth employee at Bandra Worli Sea Link were remanded in police custody till Friday.

On Sunday, Rahul Rege and Paleshwar Chavan, were entering Sea Link from the Bandra-end and were stopped at the booth. They refused to pay toll claiming to be politically-connected. An argument broke out, during which the duo allegedly attacked the attendants, Kiran Chavan and Prabhakar Bhalekar. Chavan was stabbed in the torso.

On Monday, the duo were produced in Metropolitan Magistrate’s court in Bandra. Advocate Dhananjay Dubey, who appeared on behalf of Mr. Chavan, sought strict action against the accused.

“We will, at a later date, be seeking the strictest punishment for the accused, as the incident is an indicator of the risks that toll booth attendants face due to the lawlessness of such people,” said Mr. Dubey.

Meanwhile, the police are interrogating the accused to find out where they disposed of the dagger used in the incident.

“CCTV footage has captured a small dagger in the hands of one of the accused. However, between the time the stabbing occurred and the time that the duo were caught by security personnel, they seem to have thrown it away at some point,” said an officer with the Bandra police.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (zone IX) Paramjit Singh Dahiya said, “Inquiries have not revealed any political connections of the accused. Further inquiries are under way.”
