"Star Trek: Discovery" is getting political, as the new series will tackle today's social divides in the US in the post-Donald Trump era.
"The allegory is that we really started working on the show in earnest around the time the election was happening," showrunner Aaron Harberts told Entertainment Weekly, while talking about the comparisons between Discovery season one's Klingon War and 2017 America.
The team will be using The Klingons to raise questions about race, immigration and other contemporary issues, with the aim of prompting people to take a look at the world.
"The Klingons are going to help us really look at certain sides of ourselves and our country. Isolationism is a big theme," Harberts continued.
"Racial purity is a big theme... Sometimes, they don't want to take it. It's been interesting to see how the times have become more of a mirror than we even thought they were going to be."
"Star Trek: Discovery" will premiere later this month, 12 years after "Star Trek: Enterprise" concluded. The new series has been created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman.
