Social media not only helped people from Konapur village in Sadashivpet mandal come together but also provide timely support to the family of a road mishap victim from their village.
On August 12th the youth from the village formed a WhatsApp group ‘Manam, Mana Ooru Konapur’ with an aim to create awareness among villagers about the sanitation, use of toilets, safe drinking water and other issues.
First task
Even as the group was having an informal meeting to chalk out the future course of action they got the news that Mangali Keshavulu from their village had met with a road accident and was admitted in Gandhi Hospital with serious injuries.
They set aside the agenda of the meeting and started discussing about the fate of the family of Keshavulu.
The information about the accident of Keshavulu and his being admitted in the hospital was posted in the group.
The response was huge and generous. As many as 56 members, one from a neighbouring village come forward to extend help. The contributions ranged from ₹ 100 to ₹2500 and they raised ₹25,300.
Voluntary effort
“We did not make any phone call to our members to contribute. Everyone came forward voluntarily and contributed. We collected the amount and handed it over to the family members after funeral rites were completed, said Ch. Bakkappam one of the group administrators.
“The family is very poor and need help. Keshavulu is survived by wife, son and daughter. The girl has completed her TET course and getting ready for DSC. The boy is studying intermediate. We have promised to help them in future as well,” he added. The others in the group included Ch, Bhujender Reddy, M.Sk. Hussain, B Mallesham, B. Shiva Kumar and K. Praveen Kumar.
