Three-year-old went missing last week; kidnapper still at large

Navi Mumbai: Three-year-old Raghu Nana Shinde, who was kidnapped from outside Vashi Raikway Station last week, was reunited with his parents on Saturday night after a woman found the boy playing outside her house in Kalwa and informed the police.

The boy’s kidnapper is still at large.

The boy was abducted from Vashi Railway Station around noon on September 6.

CCTV camera footage showed a drunk man carrying the boy and boarding a Panvel-bound train at 1.03 p.m. from Platform 3 at Vashi Railway Station. He was later seen getting down at Belapur Railway Station.

Around 5 p.m. on September 7, Nazira Khan of Shanti Nagar, Kalwa, found the boy playing outside her house. “Not knowing who he was or what to do with the child, she brought him home. On Saturday night, she saw news on TV about the missing child, and contacted the Vashi police. Around 12.30 a.m., the boy was handed over to us,” sub-inspector Jyoti Suryawanshi said.

Ms. Khan and her sister-in-law took care of the child for three days. “The boy never cried and ate whatever we offered. He spoke only Marathi, while I know only Hindi,” said Ms. Khan, who does household chores for a living and stays with her husband and four children.

“We suspect that the kidnapper is probably from around Kalwa, since he dumped the child there. We are trying to trace him,” senior police inspector Ajay Landge said.
