The taxi unions in the national capital today suggested fixing minimum fares for taxis, compulsory registration of cab aggregators and banning NCR taxis in the city as part of the draft of City Taxi Scheme, 2017.
The suggestions were put forth by the taxi unions at a meeting with Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot and other senior government officials here.
"It was a fruitful meeting and some interesting suggestions were received, which will be considered while firming up the final draft of the taxi scheme," said a senior transport department official.
The City Taxi Scheme, 2017, is a regulatory framework for cabs plying in the national capital.
According to sources, the scheme is likely to be divided into two parts in order to accommodate app-based aggregators like Ola and Uber, besides having general provisions for normal taxi services.
However, representatives of the various taxi unions who attended the meeting said they had pitched for four categories of taxis instead of the economy and luxury bifurcation.
"The government is coming out with only two categories. We suggested for two additional categories of luxury and SUV," said Inderjeet Singh, president of Rajdhani Parivahan Panchayat.
The transport department official said some sort of licensing for app-based cab aggregators was also on the anvil and their views would be obtained in this regard.
"We will seek the views of app-based cab aggregators on the licensing issue and a meeting with them will take place in coming days," he said.
Meanwhile, some representatives of the taxi unions complained that they were not allowed to be involved in the discussion, thus resorting to slogan shouting.
"We wanted to participate in the meeting to give our suggestions, but we were not allowed in the room. We sat on a dharna there and later met the transport minister," said Rajender Soni, general secretary of Delhi Pradesh Taxi Union.
