The police have arrested two top officials of the Ryan International School Group in connection with the murder of a seven-year-old student at its institution in Gurugram last week.

Group regional head Francis Thomas and human resource department head Jeyus Thomas were on Monday remanded in police custody for two days for further questioning.

While producing the accused in court, the police submitted that the school authorities had tampered with evidence at the crime scene.

Francis and Jeyus were arrested on Sunday night following interrogation, Gurugram Police Commissioner Sandeep Khairwar told the media.

They were booked under Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act after an inquiry committee, constituted by the Gurugram administration, observed various lapses and negligence on the part of the school management.

The police also detained acting principal Neerja Batra for interrogation.

Neerja, who was suspended by the school management on Saturday, was rushed to a private hospital in Gurugram on Monday after she complained of chest pain during interrogation. Two teachers are also being questioned, a senior police officer said.

HRD minister Prakash Javadekar said the advisories, that were issued to schools for the safety and security of students, would be sent out once again. After consulting parents and schools, model guidelines on safety and security will be formulated. Javadekar also indicated the advisory would recommend that most of the non-teaching staff positions should be manned by women employees.

“We had a meeting on the issue today. I feel that schools will be safer for children if bus drivers and other staff are women. In urban areas, women can be engaged by schools as bus drivers,” he told reporters. The Haryana government has formed 14 police teams to investigate the case.

One team has been sent to Mumbai to interrogate Ryan group CEO Ryan Pinto and director Albert Pinto.

Meanwhile, Augustine Francis Pinto, chairman of the Ryan International Group of Institutions, and managing director Grace Pinto filed anticipatory bail petitions before the Bombay High Court.
