'550 rural exchanges to be enabled with Wi-Fi by December'

A total of 550 rural exchanges are expected to be enabled with Wi-Fi by December end this year under BSNL circle, a senior official of Public sector telecom operator BSNL said today.

"50 rural exchanges are enabled with Wi-Fi and 500 more are expected to be launched by December 2017 under the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) rural project," BSNL Circle Chief General Manager L Anantharam told reporters here.


He said Wi-Fi services are planned for all 1,000 rural exchanges under the USOF, by March 2018.

On BSNL's latest 'Plan 429', which was launched recently, that provides unlimited voice and 1 GB data per day for 90 days for prepaid mobile services for Rs 429, he said since its launch there have been more than 8,000 activations under and Circles and till date over 68,000 activations have been done.

Anantharam also said BSNL is putting up 64 Base Transceiver Station (BTS) towers along the Metro Rail corridors and out of this eight sites have already been commissioned.
