PM Modi’s address to students highlights: “There is no better place for creativity and innovation than university campuses,” the Prime Minister said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed students across the nation from Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi on Monday. Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed on his Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan. Addressing the event, PM Modi said that Indians do not have the right to chant Vande Mataram if they go on to spit pan and throw garbage on roads. He further added that those who clean the roads and surroundings have the first right in the country.
Speaking about Swami Vivekanada’s address in at Parliament on Religion in Chicago on 11 September, 1983, PM Modi said people in India remember 9/11 of 1893. “Today is 9/11…this day became widely spoken about after 2001 but there was another 9/11 of 1893 which we remember. Just with a few words, a youngster from India won over the world and showed the world the power of oneness,” the Prime Minister said.
On Sunday, the Prime Minister, in a series of tweets, said the theme of his address will be “Young India, New India”. He further added that the convention will take place on the same day Swami Vivekananda delivered his Chicago address in 1893. “This year, we are marking 125th anniversary of Swami Vivekananda’s Chicago address & Pt. Deendayal Upadhyaya centenary celebrations,” he wrote on Twitter.

1:00 pm: Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday paid homage to Swami Vivekananda on Monday. In a post on Twitter, the Trinamool Congress leader said “Our heartfelt homage to Swami Vivekananda on the anniversary of his historic address to the Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893,” he said.

Speaking about the reasons for Swami Vivekananda’s achievements, the Prime Minister said he was filled with confidence even at the time we were under British rule.

He went on to say that those who chant Vande Mataram go on to throw litter and garbage on the roads. “Those who clean the roads have the first right in our country,” the Prime Minister said. “Whether we clean the roads or not, we do not have the right to dirty our motherland,” he added.

More than being in search of a Guru, Swami Vivekananda was in search of the truth,” PM Modi said. He further went on to ask the youths to respect women. He said those who do not respect women need to think about the teachings of Swami Vivekananda. “The word of Swami Vivekananda My Brothers & Sisters gave the world the message of Universal Brotherhood,” the Prime Minister said.

“Science is nothing but the finding of unity. As soon as science would reach perfect unity, it would stop from further progress, because it would reach the goal. Thus chemistry could not progress farther when it would discover one element out of which all others could be made. Physics would stop when it would be able to fulfill its services in discovering one energy of which all the others are hut manifestations, and the science of religion become perfect when it would discover Him who is the one life in a universe of death, Him who is the constant basis of an ever-changing world, One who is the only Soul of which all souls are but delusive manifestations. Thus is it, through multiplicity and duality, that the ultimate unity is reached. Religion can go no farther. This is the goal of all science.
All science is bound to come to this conclusion in the long run. Manifestation, and not creation, is the word of science today; and the Hindu is only glad that what he has been cherishing in his bosom for ages is going to be taught in more forcible language and with further light from the latest conclusions of science.”

10:40 am: University Grants Commission (UGC) recently sent out a circulat, asking over 40,000 institutions to organise a live telecast of PM Modi’s speech. Opposing the move, West Bengal government directed all universities and collegs under its jurisdiction to ignore the UGC directive last week. “The Centre cannot do it without informing or without taking the concurrence of the state government concerned,” state Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said at a press conference on Friday last week.
10:30 am: Apart from PM Modi’s address, a film on Upadhyay and Swami Vivekananda will also be screened at the event. Union Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma along with Union Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore are also expected to be present at the event at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.
10:25 am: Last week, DRI Director Atul Jain told Indian Express that around 1500 student leaders from over 100 colleges and universities have been invited. “We have invited close to 1,500 students leaders from more than 100 colleges and universities. These include student union office-bearers and academic toppers from universities which do not hold student union elections,” Jain said.
10:15 am: The event, which is titled as “Young India, New India: A resurgent nation, from Sankalp to Siddhi”, is Deendayal Research Institute (DRI) and supported by the Culture Ministry.

9:30 am: BJP President Amit Shah also addressed the youth in the country from Adikham Gujarat (Unmoved Gujarat) Yuva Townhall event, held at Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Hall in Ahmedabad. Speaking at the event, Shah asked the youth population to not fall prey to “anti-BJP campaign on social media”.
9:00 am: PM Modi, just a few hours before his address, shared a link to Swami Vivekananda’s 1893 Chicago address on Twitter. He wrote: “This speech by Swami Vivekananda, delivered on this day in 1893, continues to reverberate & inspire generations.”
8:30 am: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said Swami Vivekananda believed in the power of Yuva Shakti. “Swami Vivekananda strongly believed in the power of Yuva Shakti. He saw a vital place for youngsters in the realm of nation building,” Modi wrote on Twitter. He further added that he is inspired by Vivekananda’s ideals. “Inspired by the ideals of Swami Vivekananda, we are working tirelessly towards realising the dreams & aspirations of our youth,” he said.
