Home Minister R. Ramalinga Reddy on Saturday directed the police to strengthen local intelligence to keep a check on anti-social activities in their respective jurisdictions.
Addressing the city police for the first time after assuming charge as Home Minister, Mr. Reddy asked them to identify troublemakers, rowdy elements and extortionists. “I used to get many complaints from hawkers and roadside vendors about anti-social elements extorting ‘hafta’ from them in and around City Market. I brought it to the notice of the police, and for some time, the menace was contained. But it’s back and continues unabated,” he said.
He made it very clear that the buck stops with the police. “Jurisdictional police know who is running illegal financial activities, who peddles drugs, and so on. Such activities cannot go unnoticed,” he said.
The police have been instructed to increase security cover in IT corridors and paying guest accommodations, which will serve as a deterrent to would-be molesters. They’ve also been asked to keep a check on traffic violations.
Mr. Reddy assured personnel that complete cooperation would be given to those who work honestly. Police Commissioner T. Suneel Kumar, along with other officers and inspectors of police stations in Bengaluru, were present at the meeting.
