The Andhra Pradesh government informed the Hyderabad High Court that it has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to reinvestigate the murder case of Ayesha Meera, B. Pharmacy student, but the orders have to be issued by a higher court for reinvestigation.

An affidavit was filed by the Secretary, Home, to this effect before a Division Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganthan and Justice Uma Devi on Thursday. The Bench was dealing with a writ petition filed by parents of Meera and a PIL petition filed by three women activists seeking probe into the case. It may be recalled that a Division Bench of the High Court had acquitted Satyam Babu, whom the prosecution accused of raping and killing the student in her hostel. The Bench directed the police to reinvestigate the case.

The police filed a petition before the criminal court concerned. The magistrate rejected the petition for re-investigation. The trial court reminded that once the charge sheet is filed and trial is over the trial court has no role. This was informed to the Bench.

The Bench wanted the Andhra Pradesh government to make its stand clear. The affidavit filed now says that the order to reinvestigate shall be done by only by higher courts and sought appropriate orders.

The court was told that the SIT was already constituted.

The case will be taken up for hearing and orders on Monday.
