The national conference for rabi (winter) crops is slated to be held in the Capital about ten days from now. As always, Central government departments will discuss with the states issues concerning crops, seeds, horticulture and plant nutrition. Hopefully, better strategies will be chalked out to reduce the acute farm distress in the country.

This week a pre-conference took place to chart out the agenda. Apart from the introduction of new technology for farmers, it touched upon an even more vital issue — the need for allied activities that farmers can turn to, to supplement their agricultural income. Some of the ones that have seen a bit of success are beekeeping, fisheries and social forestry.

This and more will be shared with state agriculture officers to help prepare for the rabi season, which begins next month. The aim is to resolve pending issues and strengthen the agri marketing infrastructure.
