Fort Ground comes under ASI’s protected monuments

The Fort Ground, which comes under the control of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), is hosting the birth centenary celebrations of former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran on Saturday.

However, the district administration has removed the fencing in two places on the ground.

The fencing has been removed in such a way to create pathways leading into the ground.

An earthmover was engaged to remove the fencing to the ground.

Official sources said the district administration informed the ASI, Vellore that it would remove portions of the fencing, and replace them within two days.

Officials noted that the ground was usually let out on rent by ASI for events.

“It comes under the ASI’s protected monuments and cannot be touched. Several leaders have participated in meetings held at the Fort Ground. The fencing was not removed on earlier occasions. It could have certainly been avoided as it sets a bad precedent,” an official said.
