Fiancé accused her of cheating on him with senior policeman

An FIR was filed against an Assistant Commissioner of Police and a police constable on Thursday in connection with the suicide of a 24-year-old woman constable of Thane police on Wednesday.

The police said Sarika Pawar was posted at the Thane police headquarters and stayed in a rented flat at Manisha Nagar in Kalwa. The police said Sarika was in a relationship with police constable Amol Phaphale and their families had approved of their marriage in April 2016. The couple was to be engaged soon.

An officer with Kalwa police said, “Phaphale visited Sarika’s flat on Wednesday at 2 p.m. He then stepped out to make a call. When he returned he found Sarika hanging from the ceiling fan by a stole.” Sarika was rushed to Shivaji Hospital, where she was declared dead before admission.

A senior officer with Thane police said Sarika’s cell phone records revealed Assistant Commissioner of Police Shamkumar Nipunge of Thane police had called her several times on Wednesday. The police made inquiries with Phaphale and Sarika’s brother, Sujit, who is a constable with Navi Mumbai police.

An officer said, “Sujit said Nipunge repeatedly called Sarika and told her he would give her good postings if she agreed to meet him. On Wednesday, Nipunge contacted Sarika while Phaphale was at her house and he suspected her of infidelity. They had an argument and Sarika killed herself when Phaphale stepped out to make a call.”
