Civil engineer held for derogatory post over Gauri Lankesh’s murder

The Cyber Crime Police arrested a 22-year-old civil engineer who had uploaded a derogatory post on social media hailing the murder of journalist and activist Gauri Lankesh on Tuesday.

The post went viral, prompting the police to take up a suo motu case and track down Basavaraja Biradar, a native of Narayanapur in Yadgir district.

The accused had completed his civil engineering course and had come to Bengaluru two months ago looking for a job. He was staying at a friend’s house at Nagarabhavi Circle.

The police found that the accused had many fake email ID and Facebook accounts under fictitious names and even purchased a SIM card by producing fake identity.

The accused was produced in the court, which remanded him to seven days police custody.

The police would ascertain his criminal background, a senior police officer said.
