India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall and thunder showers for the city and most parts of the state for the next two days.
Sunder M Metri, IMD-Bengaluru director in-charge told DH on Friday that a warning has already been issued. This is because of the formation of various systems. There are upper air cyclonic circulations over coastal Karnataka and the other at east central Arabian Ocean and south west Bay of Bengal causing low pressure. An east-west shear zone at six degree north latitude and a low pressure from Rayalseema to south west Tamil Nadu is causing rainfall.
“Under the influence of all these systems the city and most parts of Karntaka will experience heavy rainfall coupled with strong winds and thunder showers. This will continue for the next two to three days,” he said.
Bengaluru for the last 10 to 15 days has been experiencing continuous rainfall. Metri said that this is because of the continuous formation of systems over the last fortnight. It is however not an unusual phenomenon. It has happened in the past. It all depends on the formation of systems. The number of rainy days could be less some days, but the intensity of rainfall will be different.
Bengaluru city from September 1 till September 7, received 209.6 mm rainfall. The normal monthly total for the month of September is 211.7mm. The city up to 5.30 pm on September 8, had received 14.2 mm rainfall. Also, from June 1 till September 7, the city has received 646 mm, which is 269 mm more than the normal.
