The Jammu and Kashmir government today offered a job to the son of a local man who was arrested in Pakistan and was later killed in jail in the neighbouring country.
Chamel Singh, who hailed from Pargwal border hamlet of Jammu district, was arrested, imprisoned, and was later beaten to death in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat jail on January 15, 2013.
Chamel's son, Dara Singh, was presented with a job letter from the Jammu and Kashmir government.
BJP state president Sat Sharma handed over the joining letter for a government job to Dara Singh.
The letter of appointment in the finance department of the state government was given following financial aid of Rs five lakh granted to the family, a few weeks back.
According to his family, Chamel, a resident of Akhnoor in Jammu, had gone missing in 2008 while working in his fields near the international border.
He was arrested in Pakistan on charges of espionage and was sentenced to five years' imprisonment.
On the verge of finishing his jail term, he died in jail, amid reports that he was "mercilessly beaten" by prison staff two days before his death.
Chamel's body was handed over to Indian authorities over two months after his death.
