While protests are continuing in various parts of the country against the killing of journalist and activist Gauri Lankesh, a national convention is being planned in Bengaluru on September 12 which will bring together activists, artists, journalists, and thinkers from all across.

A number of like-minded progressive organisations, under the banner of Gauri Lankesh Hatya Virodhi Vedike, will invite at least 60 eminent people from all States, said K.L. Ashok, one of the conveners of the proposed event. “Our demand will be for bringing to book not just those behind this one killing, but the entire pattern of violence,” he said. The place of the event is yet to be decided.

Meanwhile, friends and colleagues of Gauri are also hoping to bring out an edition of the weekly magazine to coincide with the day which will be a tribute to the slain editor, with contributions. On Thursday, many of the old staff and friends were at work at the office of the magazine at Gandhi Bazaar.

“We hope to design it as a tribute to Gauri Lankesh,” said Girish Talikatte, who worked with her. He remembered that a similar tribute edition was brought out after the death of P. Lankesh, father of Gauri and a well-known writer and journalist, in 2000.

I can’t run the magazine: Kavitha

Gauri Lankesh’s sister, Kavitha Lankesh, film-maker, said she was not in a position to run the magazine that her slain sister used to.

“I am an apolitical person. I cannot run the tabloid she did and continue the legacy of Gauri. I don’t think we will run it any more. If a core group of people who are bringing the journal decide to take it forward I will support them.”
