Huge idols taken to Basar to be immersed in the Godavari

Amid tight security, the Ganesha idol immersion got off to a colourful start here on Tuesday.

Rajya Sabha member D. Srinivas, MLC Akula Lalitha, Collector A. Ravinder Reddy, Mayor Akula Sujatha, former Mayor D. Sanjay, Sarvajanik Ganesh Mandali managing trustee Bantu Ganesh, former MLC A. Narsa Reddy, former MLA Y. Lakshminarayana and Congress leader B. Maheshkumar Goud flagged off the procession.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Ravinder Reddy said the district administration and the Police Department had made all the necessary arrangements for the smooth conduct of idol immersion. He thanked people for their cooperation and peaceful celebration of both Vinayaka Chaviti and Bakrid festivals.

Meanwhile, huge idols were taken to Basar to be immersed in the Godavari while the small ones were immersed in Vinayakula Bavi at Vinayaknagar on Hyderabad road. Some were also taken to Mallaram on Banswada road to be immersed in a local irrigation tank.

The police had made elaborate security arrangements by deploying over 1,000 personnel. Commissioner of Police Kartikeya personally supervised the process. The immersion is expected to end late on Tuesday night.

ADILABAD Special Correspondent adds: The Ganesha immersion passed off peacefully in Adilabad town with as many as 360 idols being immersed on Tuesday. The police had made elaborate bandobast to avoid any unpleasant occurrences during the event that started before noon and ended in the early hours of Wednesday. Forest Minister Jogu Ramanna and Adilabad MP G. Nagesh flagged off the shobha yatra at Sri Saraswati Shishu Mandir at Vinayak Chowk. Adilabad Collector Buddha Prakash M. Jyoti and Superintendent of Police M. Sreenivas were among those who participated.
