Students’ innovative project gets DST funds

They were finalists at a national level design Contest

Students of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, and Electronics and Communication Engineering of Sri Manakula Vinayagar Engineering College have been shortlisted as finalists at the ‘India Innovation Challenge Design Contest -IICDC 2016’ organised by Texas Instruments in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology (DST), New Delhi.

Over 11,000 students from 624 colleges across the country including IIT, NIT and IISC participated in the competition. As many as 18 teams entered the final on July 22 at IIM, Bengaluru.

Megavaruman, Mohamed Riaz from the Electrical and Electronics Engineering, and Rosheth from the Electronics and Communication Engineering presented a project on automated organic manure production. The team received a product development fund of ₹5 lakh from DST for developing their prototype as a product. The team will also get a seed fund of ₹20 lakh for the development of their Startup.

Seminar on gender sensitisation

A two-day seminar on gender sensitisation funded by Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) was held at Kasthurba College for Women here recently.

The main objective of the seminar was to sensitise the women students on the gender issues that are prevailing in the society and how to be safe.

C. Aruna, Assistant Professor of Sociology, Pondicherry University spoke on gender violence, stereotypes and impact of gender imbalance on society.

K. Sheetal, president, Sahodaran NGO spoke on the transgender’ challenges and the progress towards inclusion into the society.

S. Bascarane Inspector cum Web Officer, Puducherry police explained to the students on the various forms of cyber crimes and safe use of social media.

Rehana Begum, president, Pondicherry Women’s Conference spoke on harassment in higher educational institutions and the grievance redressal system available in colleges and universities.

First year classes begin

The first year classes of Christ College of Engineering and Technology were inaugurated here recently. Director-cum-principal A. Ravichandran delivered the welcome address.

In his presidential address, Chairman and Managing Director of the College, S. R.S. Paul stated that the college had achieved slow and sustainable growth.

As many as 25 students received cheques of ₹25,000 each under the Helping Drops scheme aimed at helping economically weak students.

Film actor Vishnu Vishal planted tree saplings in the college. M. Bharath, Senior Manager, Human Resources, Polaris Consulting and Services Ltd, Chennai delivered the inaugural address.
