A day after taking over as the chairperson of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) from Rajendra Pal Gautam, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday said decentralised sewage treatment plants that are smaller than the ususal STPs would be set up across the Capital.

Unauthorised colonies

The Chief Minister on Tuesday visited three decentralised STPs in the New Delhi Municipal Council’s area with officials of the DJB and the NDMC. The DJB’s decentralised STP plan would have a focus on unauthorised colonies that are not connected with the sewerage network so far, he said.

Asks for road map

Mr. Kejriwal asked the DJB officials to come up with a road map till Friday.

Apart from tackling the problem of lack of sewage management, the decentralised STPs would also lead to groundwater recharge and production of recycled grey water.

The Chief Minister later tweeted: “Small STPs in large numbers controlled by locals will be set up across Delhi to treat sewage and recharge groundwater at minimal cost.”

Mr. Kejriwal on Monday had met DJB officials to review water supply, vacancies in DJB, potential for setting up decentralised STPs and procurement of sewer cleaning machines.
