A 42-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself after killing his 38-year-old wife and 12-year-old son at their residence in outer Delhi’s Nihal Vihar. The bodies were found by the couple’s 22-year-old son on Tuesday.
A suicide note written by the man has been recovered, the police said.
When Nitin Poonia (22) entered the second floor of their residence in Laxmi Park, he found his father Vinod hanging from the ceiling fan.
Shocked, he ran into the other room where he found his mother Sujata and brother Prince lying dead on the bed in a pool of blood.
The family said that in the suicide note, which was recovered from the room where the deceased was found hanging, Vinod had written that he is ending his life out of guilt.
“It was a small one-page note. He wrote that he was depressed and is committing suicide out of guilt after killing his wife and child,” said Vinod’s brother-in-law Pradeep.
‘Probing family history’
“In the note, he has not blamed anyone for his act. We are probing as to what went wrong between the husband and wife that he killed his family, their family history and their financial condition,” said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Pankaj Singh.
The police have also recovered the murder weapons from the scene of the crime.
“Both the mother and the child had multiple injuries on their bodies. The wooden plank and knife, which was used in commission of the crime, have been recovered. We have registered a case under Section 302 (punishment for murder),” said Mr. Singh.
Recalling how the events unfolded on Monday night, Nitin told The Hindu that all four family members had dinner together around 9.30 p.m. after which he went to pick up his maternal uncle from Sarai Rohilla.
‘Everything was normal’
“Everything was normal. I picked up my uncle from the railway station and straight away went to my paternal uncle’s house a kilometre away from our house to spend some time with my cousins,” he said.
Nitin returned home around 4 a.m. along with one of his cousins, and went directly to his room on the first floor as he did not want to disturb his parents.
“I woke up around 10.30 a.m. and called out to my mother as she would usually come to offer me a glass of milk in the morning, but she didn’t today. When no one responded, I went upstairs and saw them all dead,” he said.
In their three-storey house, the ground floor was given on rent and the family of four used to stay on the first and second floor.
Vinod used to earn a living by running monthly committees and by giving money on interest in which his wife had recently started helping him. Prince, a Class-V student, used to attend DS Memorial Public School in Nangloi.
