The body will monitor pollution-related aspects

The State Government is setting the stage for constitution of an exclusive authority to monitor environment and pollution related issues in the urban areas.

The Government is on the look out for an experienced consultant to finalise the legal framework for the proposed authority - Clean Authority of Telangana. The proposed authority, being contemplated on the lines of Tokyo, is expected to focus on solid waste management, waste water treatment and air and noise pollution, the major aspects that are affecting the quality of urban life.

Though it was initially proposed to limit the jurisdiction of the authority to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, the plan was subsequently modified to include all the urban areas across the State. The authority would be given statutory powers and its jurisdiction would extend to other areas prompting the involvement of several other line departments too.

Given this background, the Municipal Administration Department has decided to put in place legal framework to define the structure and the jurisdiction of the authority that would be a permanent body.

Meanwhile, efforts have also been speeded up relating to launch of second phase of metro rail works. The department had initiated the process to ascertain the interest from prospective entrepreneurs and possible models before proceeding with floating global tenders.

“Given the interest evinced by prospective firms including those from Japan and other countries, the tender process this time will be definitely competitive,” a senior official said.
