‘He was struggling with depression’

The family of the deceased said that if Nitin had been home he would’ve been able to save his father Vinod, mother Sujata and brother Prince. “If only Nitin was home, he wouldn’t have let this happen. He would have saved them all,” said Sujata’s elder sister. “We wish he hadn’t left the house yesterday of all days,” added Sujata’s brother Ajay.

With his face down, Nitin nodded in approval.

Sitting in his home at Laxmi Park, the 22-year-old said his father had been struggling with depression for the last seven years.

“He was a scrap dealer and we suffered a major loss seven years ago from which our business couldn’t recover. This triggered his depression,” he said.

However, finances weren’t a problem for the family, he claimed. Three years ago, Vinod started running committees and giving loans to people from which he used to earn nearly ₹40,000-₹50,000 a month.

“And even I earn, so finances were taken care of, but his depression was never cured,” he added.

‘Couple used to fight’

“He would sometimes lock himself ina room and refuse to talk to anyone. He was a regular drinker as well,” said Sujata’s sister.

Talking about the couple’s relationship, the family said they used to fight a lot, but there was also love between the two. “He used to drink and beat her up often, but he also used to take care of her needs. Chhote mote jhagde to hote rehte they (small fights used to happen),” said the sister.

Though the fights and arguments were not uncommon, the family was shocked that Vinod would decide to kill his wife and child. “We never thought he’d kill them no matter what happened between the two,” said Ajay.
