Earlier this month, French tennis player Gael Monfils sat in the bar at The London NYC Hotel in Manhattan, wearing sweatpants and a Daniel Hechter tee.

Before his busy week at the U.S. Open, where he played and beat Jeremy Chardy and Donald Young, we caught up with Monfils. At one point, I ask him how he wants people to remember him. “As a cool guy, you know,” he says. “I’ve been blessed to be a tennis professional, so remembered as a cool guy. And that’s it.”

And if you follow Monfils’ Instagram, it’s clear he won’t have a problem with that. Here, four reasons you should pay attention to the tennis pro’s style game.

He knows exactly what he likes to wear.

Chances are you won’t find Monfils in short-shorts.He rocks Asics apparel on the court and French clothing brand Daniel Hechter when he’s not playing. And he has a specific preference when it comes to the cut of his athletic wardrobe. I like longer clothes,” Monfils says. “I like to have long shorts, not really high, but very long, you know, almost to my knee. I like when it’s a bit baggy. I prefer that kind of style.”

He probably has a better watch collection than you do.

Monfils is a fan of watches, and he started collecting them about a decade ago, he told us. “I live in Switzerland so it makes it easier.” Lately, his preference is for vintage timepieces.

He travels in style.

Looks like we need to upgrade our boring luggage. Even if you can't afford a pack like this, your carry-on can have a little more personality.

He proves that your workout gear can make a style statement, too.

And you don’t have to always go the neon route, either. Take this outfit, for example. The strong pattern on these shorts work especially well thanks to the simple white top.
