In what comes as a new twist in the attempted murder of a woman, followed by the accused’s suicide outside Mukherjee Nagar’s Coronation Park on Sunday, doctors have told the police that the victim did not suffer a gunshot at all.
Even as the final medical report is awaited, the doctors have prima facie ruled out bullet injury on her head and said that the wound appears that it was inflicted by the butt of the firearm the man later used to shoot himself. This is contradictory to the police’s initial statement that the man, Sonu Kumar, had first shot Rupal Yadav and then turned the gun on himself. Replying to a query, a senior police officer told The Hindu that the statement was issued on the basis of the information that was provided by the eyewitness who made the call to the police control room.
‘Multiple gunshots’
“The caller had heard multiple gunshots. Chances are that Sonu Kumar had fired at the woman, but missed the target or the bullet brushed past her body. This cannot be ruled out till the report comes to us. The doctors later told us that the head injury, which was deep and critical, was not caused by the gun,” said the officer.
Investigations have further revealed that the reason behind the murder attempt was the alleged entry of a new man in Rupal’s life. Rupal and Sonu had met through Facebook and known each other for over a year. She was married and had a son but was living separately.
In the three-and-a-half page long suicide note, Sonu purportedly left, he mentioned Rupali not as his girlfriend but his “wife” despite the fact that there is no record of them getting married. He wrote about how they would often fight over her growing closeness with the man and how she ignored repeated warnings from him. Further, she also was in touch with her estranged husband, something that did not go down well with him.
The suicide note also indicated that Sonu had gone to the park armed with a firearm and with a plan to eliminate the woman and kill himself. Meanwhile, Rupal is said to be stable and recorded her statement before the police on Monday.
