Villagers desilt channels, divert water to two waterbodies

Water continued to flow in Palar river and had crossed Ambalur near Vaniyambadi in the last two days.

According to officials of the Public Works Department, surplus water from the check dam constructed by the Andhra Pradesh government near Pullur panchayat, Vellore district, had been flowing in the river.

“The water flow has already crossed Ambalur. Earlier, water from Mannaru, Palar’s tributary, was also flowing into the river. This was followed by the surplus water from the check dam near Pullur that is flowing into Palar,” he said.

A. Asokan, a resident of Ambalur and member of Reversal of Ecology Committee, Vellore, said the water was flowing continuously for two days.

“It crossed Ambalur and has flowed for another 1.5 km. This is the third time that water is reaching Ambalur. However, it dried up quickly the first two times, while there is continuous flow now,” Mr. Asokan also said.

He said the plea to officials to desilt channels leading from Palar to two waterbodies – Nagaleri and Kodaiyanchi Eri – did not fetch results. “However, as the river witnessed water flow, villagers themselves had decided to take up the task. The owners of the land using water from the tanks had desilted the two channels by engaging earth movers and diverted water to the two waterbodies in the last few days,” he said.
