Two injured, principal’s office ransacked

Mild tension prevailed at the Sri Venkateswara University’s (SVU) College of Engineering as two sections of students clashed with one another on the college premises here on Monday.

According to sources, the two groups comprising third and final year students were at loggerheads over their rights over the playground. It is said that the final year students reportedly demanded that the third year students (dual degree course) should seek their permission before using the playground. The issue, which has been simmering for the past three days, snowballed into a group clash after a third year student brought in a few ruffians into the college to beat up the final year students.

Following injuries to two final year students in the brawl, their group reportedly went out to seek the third year student and the college management’s decision to resolve the issue with the help of police officials resulted in ransacking of the principal’s office on Monday afternoon.

Cases registered

According to SVU Police Station officials, the college principal has lodged a complaint over the issue and a case has been registered under sections 143, 147, 324, 353, 448 and 341 read with section 149 of the IPC and section 3 of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.

The police have also taken the students into custody and are questioning them over the incident.

Hostels closed

Meanwhile, in view of the prevailing situation, the college council has issued a circular to close the college and hostels indefinitely, urging the students to vacate the hostels by 5 p.m. on Monday.
