Heavy downpour continued to pound the North Karnataka districts on Tuesday.
Rain lashed the twin towns of Gadag-Betagiri, besides the villages in Gadag district, throwing life out of gear. It is said the showers may be a result of the cloud-seeding undertaken in the district recently.
The showers in the last few days have brought much joy to the farming community. A bike rider was washed away as the Undadi steam overflowed at Antura-Bantura village in Gadag taluk.
Shivaraj Mundaragi, 22, drowned when he was riding on the pond which is overflowing due to the showers. His body was found 500 metres from a bridge across the river.
A good spell of rain was reported at Kampli in Ballari district and surrounding villages. Agriculture officer Sridhar said the showers were beneficial to farmers as they have undertaken sowing.
Piddaiah, 40, of K Suguru village of Siraguppa taluk in the district was struck dead by lightning at Balakundi in the taluk on Tuesday morning.
The incident occurred when the victim was working in the farm. There were heavy showers in Sandur taluk also. Streams in the taluk have received copious flow of water. Rainwater entered houses in the low-lying areas.
Heavy showers were reported from Hosapete taluk in the district. Rains were reported from Raichur also. Heavy rain, accompanied by thunder, lightning and high velocity winds, lashed Mysuru city and surrounding areas for around two hours, on Tuesday evening. According to sources, Mysuru taluk received 150 mm of rain. Rainwater entered houses in low-lying areas. Sugarcane and cotton crops have been damaged in H D Kote taluk.
