Onam was celebrated at many places in the city, including homes and colleges on Monday.

Many restaurants saw a rush during lunch hour for the ‘sadya’ and various home-based entrepreneurs also cashed in on the festive season by offering pre-ordered sadyas and payasams.

“We have celebrations every year during Onam. This time, we had various cultural programmes like Thiruvathira dance, fusion dance of folk and contemporary,” said Beena Suresh Menon of NSS (Nair Service Society).

Hema Malini Pramod, a dance teacher of Sri Rudra Kalaranga Dance Institute said Onam celebrations were held at both its branches in Malleswaram and Srirampuram. Many organisations like the Kerala Samajam, East Cultural Association and Kairali Samajam have lined up celebrations from September 9.

The associations have already listed out programmes for week-long celebrations which may go on till the end of the month.
