The opposition Congress today alleged that a number of attacks have taken place on Dalits since the TRS came to power in Telangana in 2014 and asked the state government to take concrete measures to prevent such incidents.
State unit Congress president N Uttam Kumar Reddy highlighted the alleged attacks on Dalits and tribals in an open letter to Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao following a self-immolation attempt by two youths over an alleged demand for bribe by a village officer in Karimnagar district.
"Telangana came into existence on June 2 (2014) as the 29th state. It was expected that governance would be transparent, democratic, corruption-free and a role model for the country.
"But, in this state during your chief ministership, attacks and atrocities are continuously happening on Dalits and tribals in the last three and half years," he said in the letter.
Before the 2014 elections, TRS had promised to give three acres to Dalits which has not been done yet, he alleged.
Demanding that the TRS government should implement its electoral promises, the Congress leader said the state government should take concrete measures to prevent alleged attacks on Dalits and tribals.
Two men tried to set themselves on fire in front of the office of Manakondur legislator in Timmapur yesterday to protest against the demand for bribe allegedly made by the village revenue officer.
The officer was demanding the money for inclusion of the duo in the list of beneficiaries to be distributed land free of cost, the police said.
