The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) department today ordered closure of a kitchen run by a self help group providing mid-day meal to more than 900 students after it was found to be unhygienic.

The action was initiated by officers of FDA against Bhumika Mahila Mandal operating at Dhavem, Valpoi, nearly 60 kilometres from here.

During the inspection by FDA sleuths, they found that the food cooked by the Self Help Group was prepared under extremely unhygienic condition, a senior official said today.

The group was providing food to nearly 932 students from nine different schools in and around Valpoi area.

The officials also found that he was operating from unlicenced premises.

The state had recently expressed concern over the unhygienic condition of kitchens where food for mid-day meal scheme is cooked.

The FDA has also written to the regional education department office to direct the schools not to accept the food supplied by the self help group until further orders.
