The mood at Madina Nagar in HSR Layout Sector 7 during Bakrid was ruined as residents had to spend their time and money pumping out water from their homes.

Around 2,000 residents of this locality could not celebrate Bakrid this time due to heavy rains on Saturday (September 2). Most houses were filled with sewage water due to the accumulation of garbage in the drains.

Two feet of water filled Mahboob’s house, which he was able to clear only on Monday evening. “We could not celebrate our festival this time. All our energy is being spent in draining water,” said Mahboob. Even the mosque in the locality was completely filled with water.

“We have been living here for a long time. But this is the first time we did not celebrate the festival,” said Mohammed Siraj, a community leader. “No civic body came to our rescue despite multiple complaints,” he added.

He lauded the efforts of Zafar Pasha, a Class VI student who helped in cleaning the mosque day and night.

“We have spent all our money and have hired a JCB to clear the garbage from the drain to allow the flow of water,” said Mahboob, who is a daily wage worker.
