Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has set a one-month target for Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike to make the city roads pothole free. “We need to white top all roads,” he directed Mayor G Padmavathi and Commissioner N Manjunatha Prasad.

He was addressing a gathering after unveiling a foundation stone for four sewage treatment plants (STP) at Nayandahalli on Monday.

The proposed plants will come up at Vrishabhavathi Valley, Koramangala and Chellaghatta Valley, Hebbal and Doddabele. The combined capacity of the four plants will be 440 million litres per day (MLD).

The city roads are in bad shape, particularly after heavy rains in the last three weeks. Prasad had set a target to fill the 5,000 potholes by August 27. The deadline was extended twice without any success.

The chief minister blamed the previous state government for the crumbling infrastructure. “They (previous government) did shoddy work, people are angry and blaming us,’’ he said.

Siddaramaiah also directed officials to remove encroachments on drains to prevent flooding.

STPs to cost Rs 1,202 cr
The estimated cost of the four STPs is Rs 1,202 crore. Works is being taken up under the Mega City Revolving Fund (MCRF). The STPs at Vrishabhavathi Valley and K&C treatment plants will be of 150 MLD capacity. These will be designed according to activated sludge process with biological nutrient removal (ASP and BNR) and will also generate power.

As of now, Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) supplies 1,400 MLD of water from the Cauvery river to the city, plus an estimated 400 MLD of water is utilised from borewells. The total water supplied to Bengaluru is 1,800 MLD out of which almost 80% is converted to waste water. The construction of these plants is expected to be completed by 2020.

Siddaramaiah said, “The residents of Bengaluru use 180 MLD of water every day out of which 144 MLD flows out as sewage water. If we complete all our STP works across the city, we should be able to convert 150 MLD of sewage water.”

Ten new treatment plants are also being constructed at Koramangala and Chellaghatta Valley, Chikkabanavara, Nagasandra and Raja Canal. The treated water will be supplied to Bengaluru Rural, Kolar and Chikkaballapur districts.
