A day after an elderly couple was found murdered at their residence in north-west Delhi’s Ashok Vihar, the police arrested their 22-year-old attendant from Bihar.
The accused had been hired by the couple just a few days before they were murdered. Dinesh was arrested from Ara district, Bihar, on Sunday.
He will be brought to Delhi on Monday, said sources.
The police said Dinesh allegedly went to his house in Jahangirpuri after murdering the couple. He kept a part of the loot there, and then boarded a train.
The bodies of Ramlal Bhutani (76), a retired government official, and his wife Kaushal Bhutani (74), a former government school teacher, were found at their residence in Ashok Vihar Phase-III on Saturday. Their house had been ransacked and valuables were missing.
The couple had employed male attendants to look after them due to their health issues. Their other attendant Dulal Sarkar found the house locked on Saturday. After his calls went unanswered, he called the PCR. The bodies were found in one of the rooms.
Polices sources said that Dinesh was on duty from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. on Saturday. Since he was the last person seen with the couple, he was the prime suspect. A team of special staff from the district and Bharat Nagar police station was given the task to nab him.
Preliminary probe revealed that Dinesh like to bet. A team left the house for his native place and arrested him from Ara. The police have recovered Rs.8,000, and gold and diamond rings that he allegedly looted from the Bhutani residence.
According to the police, Mr. Bhutani was heart patient who had suffered a paralytic attack. The couple had hired a male nurse from a placement agency. After his angioplasty a few weeks ago, the couple decided to hire another male attendant —Dinesh. After the murder, Dinesh allegedly stole a diary in which they had noted his details.
