A woman died after falling off a train near Old Delhi railway station on Sunday while resisting an alleged snatching attempt.
Sudhir Bansal, 43, was travelling with her 18-year-old son Gaurav on Yoga Express at the time of the incident.
The police said the duo was standing near the door as they wanted to alight before the station arrived.
Family members said the incident happened close to Mithai Pul in north Delhi around 4.30 a.m.
As the train slowed down ahead of its stop, a man standing near the tracks tried to snatch Ms. Bansal’s bag. The woman resisted but lost balance, and fell off the train and on to the tracks.
“She was carrying a bag on her shoulder, which caught the eye of the man standing along the tracks. He tried to pull the bag, a bid she resisted. Since he was standing on the ground, the man had better balance compared to my wife as the train was still in motion. She failed to hold on to the bag and fell off the train,” said the victim’s husband Satyawan Bansal, a banker from Jhunjhunu.
Ms. Bansal was run over by the train and suffered severe injuries to the leg and arm.
The man, meanwhile, fled with the bag. The victim’s son was an eyewitness to the horrific incident. Seeing his mother fall off the train, Gaurav too jumped off and rushed to help his mother. He called the police control room and the ambulance helpline. He alleged the authorities arrived very late at the spot.
Had come to drop off son
Once, the police team arrived, they rushed the woman to Sushruta Trauma Centre, where she was declared brought dead. Her body was sent for post-mortem, after which it was handed over to the family.
Ms. Bansal had come to drop Gaurav off at his accommodation in the Capital, where he has taken admission in an undergraduate programme. She was a housewife and is survived by her husband and two children.
Based on Gaurav’s statement, a case under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and Section 392 (robbery) has been registered. The suspected was yet to be identified till Sunday evening.
