Special committee conducting probe; teasing, ragging will not be allowed on campus, says Director

Twentytwo students of the RGUKT Nuzvid IIIT, who allegedly roughed up their juniors a couple of days ago, would face disciplinary action. More students would be booked, said IIIT officials.

On August 29, the E-4 (Engineering final year) students reportedly entered the dormitories of their juniors on the campus and beat them up for objecting to trumpets and music, arranged by the seniors, for Vinayaka nimajjanam.

Alleging that some senior students teased and misbehaved with some girl students at the Vinayaka pandal, the juniors complained that the seniors had attacked them when they objected to it. About 11 students suffered injuries in the attack. Speaking to The Hindu on Sunday, IIIT Director Veeranki Venkata Dasu said a Special Committee had been constituted to inquire into the incident and the 15-member committee had so far identified 22 students involved in the attack. “The Committee is conducting inquiry through video recording and action would be taken against the seniors based on its recommendations. The investigation is going on and disciplinary action would be taken against more seniors, identified by the committee,” he said.

Asked about the nature of action, Mr. Venkata Dasu said as per the recommendations of the Special Committee the identified would be expelled, suspended or detained in the same semester. About five students who were responsible for triggering trouble would face serious action, he said and warned that teasing, ragging and rowdyism would not be allowed on the campus.

An interim report had been submitted to the government, district Collector, Minister concerned and other officials and a detailed report would follow. “Majority of the students involved in the incident are from Mechanical, Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) and Computer Science Engineering (CSE) streams. Last year, we expelled three students for one semester on similar charges,” the Director said. V. Srinivas, Nuzvid Dy. SP, said the police had inquired into the issue but were not involved as the management did not lodge any complaint with them. “We will extend help to the IIIT management in restoring normalcy,” he said.
