A woman councillor of the ruling was found dead in her room at her residence in south Dumdum today, police said.

Sanchita Dutta (35), the councillor of ward no 32 of Dumdum Municipality was found hanging from the ceiling of her room at her SK Deb Road home in Dumdum's Patipukur area, a senior officer of Lake Town police station said.

"At around noon, her younger son found that Dutta's room was locked from inside. When repeated calls were not answered, the family members opened the room using a key that used to be kept with the neighbour in case of an emergency. They found the councillor hanging from the ceiling after entering the room," the senior police officer said.

She was declared brought dead when taken to a nearby hospital, the officer said.

"We are looking into the matter. Unless we have the post mortem report nothing can be said," the officer added.
