Prime Minister Narendra Modi has certainly given prominence to women in his Cabinet, but mere addition of women in the male dominated Council of Ministers is not enough to change the nature of governance in the country, say experts.

After Sunday’s swearing-in, the number of women leaders holding the post of a Cabinet Minister has gone up to six.

And with Nirmala Sitaraman getting the Defence portfolio — India’s second woman Defence Minister after Indira Gandhi — she joins her colleague Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj in the Cabinet Committee on Security.

Other ministers

The current Cabinet has Uma Bharati, Maneka Sanjay Gandhi, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, and Smriti Zubin Irani holding key offices. Sitharaman’s addition to the Cabinet is being viewed positively as she will be the country’s first-ever full-time woman Defence Minister. Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi held the Ministry as an additional charge.

Speaking to BusinessLine, Saundarya Rajesh, Founder of the AVATAR Group, an organisation working on diversity and inclusion, said that the inclusion of more women in the Cabinet will aid in getting innovative solutions. “Whenever any organisation looks at creating a very diverse team, they do so for access to different lines of thinking which leads to much more robust decision making and problem solving,” she said.
