In a first-ever initiative of this scale, Chikkaballapur district in Karnataka will celebrate Teachers’ Day this year with a difference. On September 5, K. Sudhakar, Congress MLA, Chikkaballapur, will launch a unique program — Empowered Teachers Empowered Classroom — at Shantha Vidyaniketan School, Peresandra, in a bid to improve the standard of education in the district.

Planned in association with Skills and You, a Delhi-based organisation working in the area of skill development for teachers, the programme aimed to empower nearly 1,500 teachers with the vocational skills. In order to substitute rote learning with meaningful learning, teachers need to be armed with active teaching methodologies that can nurture the minds that will shape India’s future, said a press release.

Speaking about the significance of the skill development initiative for teachers, Mr. Sudhakar said: “Gone are the days when teachers read aloud from textbooks and students listened passively. We need to embrace the new techniques and methods of teaching that encourage children to become thinking individuals.”

The orientation program, to be conducted by Charu Bajaj, managing director, Skills and You, will shed light on the extensive training for school teachers from grade 1 to 12. The training will take place in three phases with eight modules focussing on active teaching and learning styles, classroom management skills, emotional connect, innovative lesson plans, hands-on experience in classroom, learning tools and strategies, creative and critical thinking skills. This will then be followed by structured assessment and observation periodically.

The event will be attended by Home Minister Ramalingareddy, Congress MP, M. Veerappamoily and Chikkaballapur Block Education Officer Shanthala. R, the release said.
