Two persons were killed and 11 others injured in a clash between two groups near Kadappakkam on the East Coast Road on Friday.
According to the police, the incident was a sequel to a dispute between the fishermen colonies at Kadappakkam and Alambaraikottai along the ECR over sharing a tractor used for hauling fibre fishing boats to the shore and over the sharing of ‘benefits’ arising out of film shooting in and around Alambarai Fort, located between the two hamlets.
Several rounds of talks between the villagers in the presence of fishing community leaders were on for the past 10 days and it was decided to have a final meeting on Friday at Kadappakkam to arrive at a solution. However, a group of fishermen from Kadappakkam was attacked by an armed group near a bridge on the outskirts at 5 a.m. on Friday.
Two fishermen, Ramakrishnan, 39, and Sekar, 35, died on the spot and 11 others sustained injuries in the clash. The injured were rushed to a hospital in Puducherry. The Choonambedu police rushed to the spot and sent the bodies for post-mortem.
