Launching a city-wide campaign to prevent the spread of vector-borne diseases on Friday, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said Residents’ Welfare Associations (RWAs), and children and women should lead the charge to prevent mosquito breeding in their communities and homes.
A large-scale training programme for RWAs, school principals and teachers, NGOs and other community groups was organised by the government at Thyagraj Stadium. After a short film on how to prevent dengue, chikungunya and malaria was screened, Mr. Kejriwal urged Delhiites to take up the campaign against the diseases.
He said three campaigns were needed to reduce the spread of the diseases. First, he said, each RWA should conduct an inspection in their area every Sunday to look for clean water collecting, since it is in this water that dengue-causing mosquitoes breed. Then, he said, children should spend 10 minutes before going to school to check their homes for collected water and mosquitoes breeding. Lastly, he said that women should inspect their homes for potential mosquito breeding sites.
