Metro barricades near stations hinder traffic, temporary road washed away

The torrential rain since Friday night has exposed the shoddy work of the civic agencies on Kanakapura Road, with the patch work of the road near the Metro project getting washed away. The road beyond Yelachenahalli, where the Metro work is in progress, is in a sorry state, especially near the stations.
Adding to the agony is the work taken up by the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), which has barricaded its newly constructed manholes, blocking the motorists’ path. With Metro workers pumping out rainwater from the site back onto the already flooded road, motorists had a tough time finding their way around.
The barricades near the stations at Konankunte Cross and another at Gubbalala gate, have occupied more than half the road, leaving motorists with very little space to move. Archana Singh, who commutes daily on this stretch, says she fears falling off her two-wheeler riding on the pothole-riddled road. “I park my bike at the Yelachenahalli Metro station, but it takes me at least 40 minutes to commute the two-km stretch from my house. Though traffic on Kanakapura Road is not so dense, the bad road has slowed down traffic,” she added.
Savitramma, a senior citizen says she has stopped crossing the road on her own since the Metro barricades prevent one from getting to the other side. “The road has been reduced to less than half its width and is devoid of footpaths. Motorists and pedestrians have to negotiate the slushy stretch, thanks to the heavy rain,” she added.
BMRCL’s managing director Pradeep Singh Kharola told DH that he visited the Metro site on Kanakapura Road on Saturday morning to assess the situation first hand.
