Post-bifurcation scenario puts PG students on the edge

In the 57th year of its existence, Sri Venkateswara Medical College (SVMC) has many firsts to its credit and crossed several milestones, but does not have a single super speciality seat to offer.

In fact, there are just a handful of super speciality government seats in limited streams in Andhra Pradesh today — all in Visakhapatnam, Kurnool and SVIMS Tirupati put together. It is common knowledge that more than 50 % of students in the State used to seek admission in super speciality courses at Gandhi Medical College, Osmania Medical College and Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad before 2014. After bifurcation, the PG medical students are a perplexed lot, as the division has led to a fall in more than 50 % of super speciality seats in Andhra Pradesh minus Hyderabad.
