The district police managed to rescue a law college student, who was kidnapped from Paniyadi here in the afternoon, late in the evening near Karkala on Thursday.
Vijay Kumar Shetty (32), a student of Vaikunta Baliga College of Law, was kidnapped from his room at Paniyadi here by a gang in two cars between 2.30 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Sanjeev M. Patil, Superintendent of Police, told The Hindu that Mr. Shetty had some financial dealings with the accused who kidnapped him. He was supposed to have used their money in some business in Belagavi. Mr. Shetty lived in Belgavi from 2004 to 2014 and had incurred heavy losses in shares. The accused had also filed cases of cheque bounce against him in Belagavi.
The accused had come here to get that money. “They kidnapped him and beat him. The police finally managed to trace him near Karkala and rescued him at around 6 p.m. We will soon be making some arrests in this case,” he said.
A special team was formed to crack this case and the police had managed to crack it in four hours. A native of Kavadi village near Kota in Udupi district, Mr. Shetty had joined the law course at the Vaikunta Baliga College of Law here, three years ago.
“Though the victim has identified a few of the accused, we cannot disclose their names now as it would hamper investigation,” Mr. Patil said.
