A non-bailable warrant (NBW) was issued against the suspended former in-charge of the Encephalitis Ward at the BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur, where 30 children had died last month owing allegedly to a shortage of oxygen, Dr Kafeel Khan, who remained at large after being booked for laxity.

According to the police sources, Kafeel was suspected to have fled to Nepal, which was not very far from Gorakhpur.

The special task force (STF) of the state police had conducted raids at the possible hideouts of the doctor but he could not be apprehended.

''He may have fled to Nepal,'' said a senior police official in Gorakhpur.

Police was keeping a close watch on the relatives and friends of the suspended doctor, who was charged with negligence as he had failed to inform his superiors about the situation in time.

Police officials said that attachment proceedings would be launched against Kafeel if he did not surrender within a week.

NBWs have also been issued against six other accused persons in the matter all of whom had been absconding after being booked.

30 children, mostly new born, had died allegedly owing to shortage of oxygen at the hospital in a period of 36-hours on August 10 and 11.

As many as six Medical college officials, including its principal, were suspended. FIRs have also been lodged against six officials in this connection.

The principal of the medical college Dr Rajiv Kumar Mishra and his wife Dr Purnima had already been arrested and were currently lodged in jail.
